The babies need to go. If I don’t get rid of the babies something bad is going to happen. I can’t find any places that will take them. Someone I know suggested mobilizing the blogging community and people I know. I can’t do that when I’m immobilized myself. I’m at the office 10 hours a day. Then I come home and send emails and make phone calls trying to find somewhere for the babies to go. If I can’t find something soon they will be turned out (and they are totally clueless on how to take care of themselves) or I’ll be forced to take them to a kill shelter. That includes the famous Rambo from the Wise Guy video.

So this is a plea. If any of you are good at mobilizing… would you? I need to find no kill shelters or foster homes or homes for the babies and a couple of the adults. There are a lot of SoCal people on Twitter as well as SoCal bloggers, but I can’t even turn on Twitter or Yahoo during my lunch hour at work anymore. Everyone is tying my hands and my babies are going to die.

You’d think if the blogging community could send a dying woman to Disney World that they could save a few cats from dying. If anyone knows how to get the Twitterverse and bloggers to help save my babies… you do not know how grateful I would be. This has been killing me. I can’t eat. I can’t sleep. I’m messing up at work. I look at them and start sobbing imagining them being put to sleep or run over because they’ve been kicked out of my house.

If there is a way to start a grass roots movement to find places for my babies I know you people can do it. This is not a joke. It’s not funny. It’s making me sick it’s that serious. I’ve had a few people make jokes about it, and it’s not funny. You’re a nice person but making a laughing remark about a situation that is causing me so much stress and unhappiness isn’t a nice thing to do. It’s so bad, I can’t write. I can’t read. I can’t even look at my edits. I just want to throw up. Or hug my Geeky or my Louie. I can’t even imagine not having my Louie to wake me up in the morning or sleep on my foot.

If any of you have hearts and time and maybe even resources, please can you help my babies … and me? We live in Orange County, CA and we are not opposed to them going to many different places – separating them – as long as we know they will be cared for and not killed.

Thank you all for reading. (Please see comments for more specific info.)
Updated info:
I appreciate everyone’s good wishes and the links. Thus far, all the links provided are links we already have. We have checked all the shelters and rescues. No one is taking cats at this time. We have one no kill shelter left to check. We did receive word from one rescue group to please not send them to any shelters that do not specifically tell us they will NEVER kill them because some places say they are no kill but after the alloted time, they do. I’m told the kill percentage in Orange County is 80% currently. So basically, any shelter I take them to is signing their death warrant.
More info re the situation: We cannot have the cats here anymore. To do so risks the loss of the roof over our heads. My DH is newly out of rehab and shaky emotionally. He loves cats but the threat of losing what little stability we have has freaked him out to the point that if I cannot find somewhere for the cats to go soon, he could well turn them out.
In this economy, losing your home is difficult. I will not get a raise this year as my company instituted a wage freeze right before my review date. I don’t live in the greatest neighborhood but losing this place means probably living in a worse neighborhood or going into motel living. Putting my DH into that kind of situation is a guarantee that he will not make it.
We love our cats but we cannot keep them any longer. We had already been trying to find homes for the 5 kittens but now we have to let the adults go too – Dummy and Swirly the formerly feral kittens, Rambo, Noisy, Bitty Junior, and Louie.
My babies are all going to the vet on the 11th to be fixed and get a clean bill of health. After that we need to find homes for them. Even foster homes will do because we are putting them on lists to go to rescue shelters where they will have every opportunity to be adopted. Two of the cats – Rambo and Harlequin Girl – are listed at Petfinders and so far all the emails I’ve received (and there have been a lot) fit the criteria listed for probable brokers who will sell them to labs. It’s disgusting and disheartening.
I’ve not gone to Craig’s List yet in part because of how bad all the Petfinders emails have been. These people trolling for animals should be stopped. I will probably be listing them on Craig’s List this weekend when we have more photos and can put up a page for them because it looks like we may only have homes for a few of them so far.
I’m not sure how Neil Gaiman got my link but I appreciate him re-tweeting the link and I appreciate his fans’ offers to assist. This is the kind of grass roots assistance I was hoping for – real people with real hearts, not people looking to lecture and turn their noses up or people who are pretending to be genuine adopters but are really just murderers.
Please know that we are doing everything we can to ensure that our kittehs will be happy and safe and loved. That is our only focus. Any help or new resources that people can provide is appreciated.
Rambo is featured in the book trailer for The Wise Guy here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cr4gcFQShMM
Some of the other kittehs can be seen in this Flickr stream:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/26303384@N08/sets/72157604862875988/
New photos are forthcoming this weekend.
Again, thank you all for your good wishes, positive thoughts, helpful suggestions, and offers of help. My daughter and I sincerely appreciate them.

Aw sweetie, I’ll ask around, I asked Mike, but he can’t take another one. I’ll ask around at the kids’ school. ~ZAM~
June 2nd, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Someone will be taking them all to get fixed and clean bills of health so people can be assured they are okay. They have never been outside except for the ones who were feral kittens, but they have been indoors since Rott tamed them.
Any and all help is appreciated. Even if you know someone who can foster them while they are waiting to be adopted, that would be good. They are all going on a wait list so foster homes in SoCal would be wonderful.

Awww, luvvie. I just had to do the same thing last week. Do you have an organisation called Cat’s Protection over there? Here, they take your cats, foster them while they search for permanent owners, then re-home them.

June 3rd, 2009 at 12:01 am
Oh Lex, this is awful – distance (and quarantine) preclude me from offering a home to any of them, but I hope that someone in the same country/state/city/area is able to help. I’d be devastated if I had to re-home of my pain-in-the-neck (because it would not work – he is dog-like … faithful and has filthy habits).
Good Thoughts to you and to them and Positive Vibes for finding Happy Homes as soon as possible!

Mary – Thank you!
T – If you know people who know people in SoCal that can help too because sometimes it’s all in who you know. I’ve seen something get passed through a dozen hands to end up with someone who could help and did. Not for me and not in this situation but if it could work for others, why couldn’t it work for me and the babies?

*Hugs* and best of luck in your search :c)

So sorry to hear about your kitties, Lex! You might want to contact Humane Society of the United States, which is more animal-rights oriented than the ASPCA – they might know of a rescue group locally. We have several here in WI, so they have to be everywhere. Even the staff at Dogtown might have some idea of a sister group? Just a thought.
June 3rd, 2009 at 7:05 am
I am so sorry, Lex. My kitties are definitely part of my family!
If I didn’t already have the max number for where I live, I’d come and get them myself.
I’ll post the information on my blog (www.themanyshades.blogspot.com) today for people to come and check it out.
Again, so sorry I can’t help other than that!

Try searching “animal rescue” places instead of “animal shelters”. Rescues place the animals in established and screened foster homes and the foster families take them to local pet stores regularly to meet the public.
We walked into a pet store browsing. We weren’t looking to adopt that day, but our dog was a perfect fit. Meeting the fosters made a big difference. They aren’t just caged and waiting for a home, they are in loving environments. So don’t think shelter, think rescue. Google “animal rescue places in CA”. There are several. I found this:

I’ll be posting this on my blog oday (www.themanyshades.blogspotcom) today and I hope it gets resolved.
If I didn’t have so many kitties myself I’d bring one home myself as I’m only about 5 hours away from Southern California. Makes me wish I was still on the farm in Ohio. There you can never have enough cats it seems and on 90 acres, having 6 or so wouldn’t be frowned upon. LOL!
But here in Southern Nevada, they think you’re the little old bag lady if you have more than one…and I have three…LOL!
Good luck in your search!

I’m the friend who Mary mentioned. Put it up on my LJ first thing out of bed this morning. I’d take them in if I could, but between the distance–Indiana–and the fact that I already have the maximum number of pets my city’s law allows (6–1 dog and 5 cats), I just can’t. I wish I could, and I really hope you find help for them. *hugs*

The only place I can think of is Cat Haven in Indianapolis. The website is http://www.catshaven.org/ if you want to contact them to see if they have a resource near you. They have been around for a long time, so I am sure they would know of no-kill shelters in other areas.
If I wasn’t trying to get on my feet again, and your kitties liked dogs, I would take some of them, especially since I left mine with my ex-husband and miss having cats. Unfortunately, my mom isn’t fond of cats.
Good luck to you and your cats.

I just thought of something else. You may want to check Petfinder.com out as well, if you haven’t already. You can search shelters in your area and see if there is a no-kill one. They may also post for you that you are looking for homes for your cat. I am not sure where you live in Orange County, but I use to live near Orange as a kid, so I put that in and got a list of 11 agencies. This one seemed like it might be of help to you, if you haven’t already contacted them.

I got linked here, and I’d like to help, but this post needs more information. It’s very difficult to do research or make phone calls on your behalf without specifics.
How many cats? How old are they? What are their general temperaments? Which shelters have already turned you down? How far are you willing to drive to drop the cats off? What times will you be available to transport them? Can you afford to pay impound/adoption fees? If so, how much? What’s the deadline?
Also, and please take this in the spirit with which it’s intended, because I want to help:
You might get a more significant response if you give the back-story for WHY you have to give up your cats. I mean, who’s kicking them out of the house? Why won’t other solutions for keeping your cats work?
While it’s technically not anybody’s business, you are soliciting total strangers for their help, and it would help people connect with you if they knew more about your situation, and if they had a reason to believe you really NEED their help. In these kinds of situations, the more information, the better.

Try Craigslist.com, post them under the pets sections, “Free to a good home” and they will get taken quickly. Or even post them on craigslist for no kill rescues and what not.
http://www.craigslist.com is a wonderful resource for pet owners. I have found both my babies through craigslist. The “pets” section on CL are full of pet lovers that will help you out.
Hope this helps

Miss Kitty is full and cannot help. I’ve tried all of the links above without success thus far. All of the cats are going to the vet on the 11th to be fixed and given a clean bill of health. They are available to permanent or foster homes. If you can foster them or know someone who can, please know that they are on a wait list to go to a rescue shelter where they will be shown weekly in an attempt to get them adopted. Meanwhile if someone can foster them we will try to take them ourselves to events where they could be adopted.

Catster’s community has a railroad that will relocate cats to new homes. They pass the cats from person to person and state to state. Check the forum. (I put a link to catster here instead of a link to my website.)
Get references if you put out a “Free to good home” ad. It’s not always cat lovers who take free cats….

Sent your link out to all my s cal friends….maybe someone……? just moved into a house with no screen doors and adopted 2 strays … 2! . (No screen doors!) and it would break my heart for an indoor to run out and get hurt or lost.

MES – I have only 1 girl. Harlequin Girl aka Girly. I will post a photo of her but she’s a little bigger now. I wouldn’t even know how to get her to Boston.
Sarah – I have big males and little males. There is Rambo who was featured in my book The Wise Guy and is in the video for the book.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cr4gcFQShMM
Rambo has a little brother, still a kitten really but growing into a young cat. He’s black like Rambo but with a white throat. His name is Tux.
A couple of them would do better as a pair:
Geeky and Chewy are grey tabby kittens, male. They play together all the time. There is one adult male about a year old and his younger brother who are always together. Noisy and Noisy Little Brother. They are grey tabbies, silver with black stripes.
I’m going to try to put some photos up in a bit. My daughter Nikki is getting some photos now.
lnorigb – They will all be going to the vet on the 11th to be fixed and checked out. They will be available to adopt after that. Chewy and Geeky are a little sketchy with strangers but they warm up quick and are outgoing, playful and sweet. Noisy and his Lil Brother are quieter, not as playful or outgoing but are also very sweet. The two black kittehs, Rambo and Tux are outgoing and fearless.

Your comments don’t really explain much. Your landlord shouldn’t be able to suddenly change your lease to “no pets” without warning—you have legal recourse if there is a pet clause in your lease. Is there?
Stick it out. Don’t kill your cats because you have a crazy landlord.
June 5th, 2009 at 10:59 am
Hi luv, I’d take ‘em in a second if I wasn’t on the other side of the continent. What about putting signs up around the neighborhood? Or in the local library? That tends to work fairly well.

Thanks hon. Hope everything works out. Xoxo

Reading through your comments, it looks like you have several people ready to offer you some homes! Congrats! You have my sympathy! I’m in a similar situation: I have to place several critters due to my current unemployment and I’m hanging onto them tooth and nail until I find the perfect homes! I know how hard it is to be forced to give up a beloved pet. I’m sure you will be able to find arrangements for them other than high kill shelters, and you are already making some progress!
I’m all the way across the country (found you via Neil Gaiman Twitter), but I have a huge pet rescue email list. Our extended contacts go all over the country, and I will be sure to forward them this page!
I wish you luck for your beautiful kitties and yourself!

I’m a friend of EM Lynley’s and do cat rescue up in the Bay Area (which is why I have 13 cats). I’m originally from Southern Cal and am going to try and find my old contacts to see if I can find anyone to help. Don’t turn them out or send them to a shelter; between everyone you WILL find homes for them. Would you be willing/able to drive them up here if homes could be found for them in Northern Cal? Just throwing that out there. They’re beautiful kitties and I’ll do anything I can to help. My email is zhadi@aol.com – please feel free to contact me.
Best,
Dana

A pretty comprehensive list in case other options fall through, but I’m thinking you’re gonna get individuals to help.
Hang in there.

I hope you can find a good person to save your kittens,

That’s the best thing I can find for you but you may also want to talk to the people who work at the no kill shelters. They usually have a kind heart and may opt to keep one of the kittens.

I know some people in SoCal so will ask around (am in Ohio myself so can’t really help). But I do want you to know that I know several people who have successfully and safely placed pets through Craig’s List. I also know a lot of REALLY serious animal-lovers who check Craig’s List first because they know that the animals at no-kill shelters are safe while the animals on Craig’s List are on a time-line. According to my gf, charging even a small “rehoming” fee keeps most of the trawlers at bay since there are free animals available so readily these days that there’s not reason to bother paying $5 or $10 for a single animal (which is still WAY cheaper than the people looking for pets would have to pay to the pound). Good luck, dear *hug*

I wish I could take in your babies, but I already have two and that’s the maximum we are allowed.
BUT
I urge you to contact the Cat House on the Kings sanctuary (it is in South California)

The are no kill and take all sorts of cats in.
